Oakville Detached Accessory Dwelling Unit By-Laws

In 2023, Oakville finalized an as-of-right zoning by-law to implement detached accessory dwelling units on properties across the city.

WHAT ARE DETACHED ACCESSORY DWELLING UNITS?

Detached accessory dwelling units are secondary dwellings located in the rear yard of a principal residence. They are intended to be a modest-scale separate housing unit that integrates sensitively within existing residential neighbourhoods. Detached accessory dwelling units in Oakville promise to be a perfect solution for housing loved ones, generating rental income, or gaining additional live-work space, while increasing housing flexibility and the value of your property.

SIZE & HEIGHT

The suite must not be taller than 4.0m in height and the greater of 42sq.m or 5% of the overall lot area in size. A 0.6m setback is required along the side and rear property lines.
